We used a tree map to identify 4 small nations not even mentioned in the text. Actually the Vatican is briefly mentioned because it is in fact the smallest of the 200 independent countries in the world.
The tree map allowed my students to view and compare population differences, Vatican City has 821 inhabitants compared to Andorra's 72,000 plus. (Oh yes,Monaco population is just over 32,00 and San Marino is just over 29,000.) We compared land area, government, religion, ethnicity, spoken language, climate, currencies, bordering countries, and economies.
Our primry source, Concise Earth, helped the students realize that tourism drove all these economies except the Vatican which relies on contributions from the over 1 billion Roman Catholics in the world. Sometimes a side trip can be very eductional.
